By participating alongside SLAM in the Experts in Fine Art Fair, these four chambers have taken on the mission of revealing the high skills of the expert and defending the need for his presence in the art market.

Around the 40 experts offering for sale art objects selected in each of their fields, events and conferences revealed the skills and specificities of these demanding professionals, determined to put the love of the art object at the heart of the market:

Discovery stand: curiosity for the work of art

Art objects, curious objects, everyday objects that have become rare, objects that reveal a period or a fashion.

Pedagogical area: become an expert for an hour

A discovery of rare, authentic, reissued, real and fake objects. A playful approach to raise the issues facing experts, the complexity of identification or expertise.

Conferences

Twelve conferences to explore the different aspects of the expert’s role by proposing an overview of this profession, which has become one of the cornerstones of the art market.

The programme

Friday 24 September

11.30 am – From the occurrence of a loss to its anticipation: the art object, the expert and the insurer.
Emmanuel REMOND and Gilles VIVIER, experts in early sculpture and in jewellery, members of FNEPSA.
Should we wait for a loss to bring all three together? NO!
The expert in art insurance is known as the post-loss professional who can answer the technical, legal and economic questions raised by the various forms of loss: fire, theft, breakage, transport… Today, in the age of prevention, before any loss, through prior appraisal and advice, the expert gathers proof of existence, determines the value of the work of art, defines the best cover for the object and removes exclusions.
The expert in art insurance is the only interface between the insurer and the insured. He or she prevents conflicts and brings the parties together through amicable mediation to define the fair amount of compensation.

1 pm – Génération Formes Utiles: French designers in the age of Growth (1945-1973), cutting-edge materials and pioneering concepts. Thibaud LANNUZEL, expert in post-war reconstruction design, member of CEA.
This talk follows on from my doctoral research, which highlights the work of a whole line of young designers who, during the period of growth commonly known as the Trente Glorieuses (1945-1973), shaped the French landscape in mass-produced design and interior fittings. This generation promoted design from the end of the Second World War, based on the doctrine of social functionalism championed earlier by their elders Jacques Dumond, René Gabriel, Marcel Gascoin and Louis Sognot, four major figures of the reconstruction and members of the UAM, who trained this generation at school or in their agencies, where these young designers cut their teeth. Using examples, we will take the opportunity to study some appraisal methods used to attribute, identify or date the creations of this rich post-war period.

3 pm – Bequest, exhibition, conservation, transmission: the story of a great private collection of film photographs. Isabelle CHAMPION, expert in cinema (history, photographs and documents), member of CNE.
The story of this collection, unique in the world, of more than four million photographs of all periods and origins – put together by the great set photographer and collector Roger CORBEAU (1908-1995) and his film-loving collaborator Gabriel DEPIERRE (1929-2004) – deserves at last to be told.

5 pm – What? Professional ethics: Didier LARGEAULT, expert in Art Nouveau and Art Deco, member of CNES.
An analysis of the rules surrounding appraisal, which give it meaning and fully justify it. Ethics is the only vehicle for authenticating and revealing the work of art.

Saturday 25 September

11.30 am – The collectible hunting weapon. Patrick BURNET, expert in luxury hunting weapons, member of CEA.
Presentation, history, appraisal and insurance.

1 pm – The insurance expert, a speciality. Daniel CHOL, expert in drawings, member of CNES.
All-risks insurance for art and valuables remains the must among insurance contracts for owners of large movable assets, collectors or gallery owners who want the best cover after theft, fire or water damage.

3 pm – From East to West: the art and secrets of Chinese porcelain. Marie-Pierre ASQUIER, expert in European and Asian ceramics, member of FNEPSA.
In the Age of Enlightenment, France, like so many other countries, sought to unlock the mystery of the Chinese porcelain that fascinated it so much. French manufactories were then largely influenced by this porcelain and its exotic decoration. Over time and with much effort, they eventually created their own original style, which in turn conquered the world.

5 pm – “The independent expert must be saved”. Frédéric CASTAING, expert in autographs and manuscripts, member of CNE.
The Chambers of Experts fully committed to defending independent appraisal believe it is more necessary than ever to restate this obvious fact: no serious guarantee without serious appraisal! They will do so with all the technical means at their disposal, everywhere and with all those who believe there is still a place for genuine expertise: our world after. The expert is neither the inventor nor the owner of his art, but the custodian, at a given moment, of knowledge and practices accumulated by those who came before, so that he in turn passes them on, enriched, to those who will follow. A considerable responsibility. A competence that must not be debased.

Sunday 26 September

11.30 am – Ivory… Between protecting the living and protecting existing art. Claude VILARS, expert in 18th-century furniture and collectibles, member of FNEPSA.
Acquiring or selling this noble material, which comes from a majestic animal, requires compliance with rules that we can and must pass on to you, whether legislation or the documents required for any transaction, in order to protect living animals as well as the masterpieces handed down to us by the past.

1 pm – The work of the glassmaker Charles Schneider (1881-1953). Laurence SERRE, expert in ceramics, member of CEA.
This creator, behind many technical and artistic innovations, is very present on the art market; his huge output was produced by his manufactory, one of the largest European glassworks of the inter-war period. Today, faced with strong demand and very high prices, fakes are appearing on the market: the expert’s role is essential in this situation, which is detrimental to future buyers.

3 pm – “The Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Parma: study of a corner niche of Louise-Élisabeth of Parma”. Patrick BERTH, expert in 17th and 18th-century furniture – wood and Boulle marquetry, member of CNE.
This lecture, as a case study, will present the study of a corner niche that belonged to Louise-Élisabeth of Parma (1727-1759), eldest daughter of Louis XV, and will highlight the dual competence of expert and restorer. It will be in two parts, starting with the history of the piece (discovery, research), followed by the study of the restoration file, with emphasis on the use of vacuum techniques.

5 pm – The expert and the safeguarding of heritage in the restoration trades. Marc VOISOT & Christine JABLONSKI, expert in clockmaking and bronze gilding, member of CNES; Curator of Historic Monuments, DRAC Bretagne.

2021 GUEST OF HONOUR

The Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image is the result of a close partnership between the La Charente county council, the French Ministry of Culture, Angoulême city council and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, which was able to create this unique public institution dedicated entirely to the “9th art” (comics).  The Cité includes a comics museum, a heritage library, a public library, a documentation centre, a renowned comic shop, an authors’ residence (la Maison des Auteurs) and an Art & Essai [Art and Experimentation] cinema.

The Cité is spread over three spectacular buildings overlooking the river Charente, which flows alongside. The Cité is located at the heart of the image hub which was set up in the county. The Cité and the hub together bolster Angoulême’s domestic and international reputation and confirm its status as the worldwide capital of Franco-Belgian comics
